There is something indefinably cool about living in a city which sets up an open-air ice-skating rink in the city centre during December.

(probably because it's something very unlikely to happen in Australia)

There's one in Birmingham too - I must visit it

And in London. And in Edinburgh. It's actually fairly ubiquitous here...

There are at least two of these here. And a downhill snow run for tire inner-tube riding. (But I'm just showing off now.)

Even Cardiff has one. Doesn't just about everywhere in this (I'm in Manchester at the moment) part of the world?

You're over here ? Err, cool ! What are you up to ? I didn't think there were any Cons around this time of year :-)

Sadly, there aren't any cons. If there were, I'd have gone to one. It seems kind of a shame to visit Europe when there's nothing in particular on.

I'm on my way to the USA via the USA and here, while gaining lots of UA frequent flyer miles. Here in Manchester for under 24 hrs (means not having to pay the massive UK arrival tax), having spent over 34 hours getting here via Sydney, San Francisco and Frankfurt. Going to Seattle tomorrow, via Munich and San Francisco.

At the moment, I'm at one of the airport hotels and using the wireless of the hotel across the road.

Don't they do something similar in Melbourne in June, though?

They did during the 90's at the Myer Music Bowl, but haven't for about 5 years.

D'you fancy visiting it at some point? I cannot skate to save my life but it'd be nice to meet up with you two *sometime* before eastercon. Of course, that might involve me in being organised...

Well, that sounds like about my level of skating ability too, and it sounds like a good idea to catch up. Ummm ... rwrylsin and I would be available on some weekday evenings (although usually tired and preferring to bury our noses in our computers :-) ), or next Sunday or the weekend afterward ... how about you ?
(say, maybe we should drag pickwick into this too ?)

Sunday sounds good. Weekday evenings are OK-ish (I finish at 2000 and apparently the rink's open till 2200 on weekdays). I'm off on Tuesday and Friday, though (but I think you have ordinary job hours/days). This Sunday the best bet, d'you think (but not early...)?

Yup, Sunday sounds good, and we're unlikely to surface before midday, so "not early" sounds good too. Ummm ... maybe 2pm or so ? Meet ... somewhere vaguely around the square, and/or near entrance to the ice skating ?

2pm or so, somewhere near the entrance to the skating sounds do-able. I'll probably be wearing black....
