02:41 pm - Micro-rant ...
(someone's probably already posted this rant, but I haven't yet caught up on 18 days worth of LJ yet :-) )

I just watched some of the BBC Olympic coverage. Did no-one at the BBC think that perhaps, what with the games being held in China, and likely to feature more than the usual number of Chinese athletes, that it might be a good idea to teach their presenters how to pronounce Chinese ? Or at least not to embarassingly totally mangle it (in different ways each time, no less !?). In 30 minutes of listening they managled "Shi" in two different ways, got Liu Xiang's name very wrong, and failed at "Ji". Sheesh !

Channel 7 here hasn't done too bad, but there's still a fair amount of mangling going on.

I imagine Carrie Gracie pronounces everything perfectly due to living and studying in China and being married to a Chinese pop-star for a while.

Not being a sports fan though, I've not watched any of it past the opening ceremony, so I don't know how heavily they're relying on her.

Heh, I'm still laughing at the (I think) Scottish commentator's pronunciation of place names. Which really, I wasn't expecting to be quite so odd.
