|05:41 pm - Octavia Butler ...|
(from the "... it's a bit late now" department)
Sadly, I don't think I've ever read any Octavia Butler. Certainly, I don't recall reading any of her novels - I may have read a short story or two in a collection somewhere along the way, but nothing that I can bring to mind.
So, what would you recommend ?

ALL OF THEM.
Er... Kindred is brilliant and weird timetravel/horror. Not typical science-fiction at all.
Dawn, Adulthood Rites, and Imago are terrific and possibly the most straightforwardly science-fictional of all her writing - post-apocalypse/alien invasion.
The "Patternmaster" series - Wild Seed, Mind of my Mind, Clay's Ark, Survivor, and Patternmaster, are variable in quality but maybe the best sequence to start with, because all of them are stand-alones.
The two Parable novels - Parable of the Sower and Parable of the Talents - are both scary because we are so close to the world she describes.
There's a collection of short stories available, Bloodchild, which may be a good introduction.

I heartily endorse this.
I think I am in exactly the same position, sadly. I must ask rhionnach
if she has any.
