Just when you think the Tour de France has no surprises left, up pops a day like today - an exciting time trial. Both Cadel Evans and Levi Leipheimer put in amazing efforts, Evans ending up 23 seconds away from the yellow jersey, and Leipheimer only 8 seconds behind Evans. Tomorrow's final stage may yet see some serious racing on the way to Paris, rather than the usual procession followed by a bunch sprint. Apparently there are still 32 seconds worth of time bonuses available (for winning two intermediate sprints and the final sprint) - of course, Messrs Boonen, Hunter and Zabel may have something to say about anyone else getting any of "their" sprint points, as I think the green jersey is still up for grabs too.

Meanwhile, finished Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows this afternoon (finally got around to buying it last night), and have now caught up on most of the LJ posts about it from the past week (trawled back to skip=750 or so and looked for anything with the word "spoiler" and a cut-tag :-) ). In brief, I enjoyed it, and thought it made for a good conclusion to the series.

I had a spoiler post and a few links to other really good sites. They should be the most recent posts on my LJ.

TdF was exciting, no doubt. But I don't think I'd understand cycling race tactics even if someone carefully explained them to me in english. Other than "take a lot of medication and don't get caught doin' it", of course.

In bunch racing, especially in teams, the basic tactics are :
On flat stages, let someone else do most/all of the work, and set up a sprint finish.
On mountain stages, try not to lose too much time (or, if fit enough, take some time on everyone else).
On time trial stages, go berserk and try to beat everyone.

Ok, there are complications depending on which riders are aiming for a high place in the general classification, or riding for specific jerseys (especially the green).

Hmm, so much for individual strategies. Now, for teams,...
