The problem at the second level is that it ends up being a recursive loop, with a "he thinks she thinks he thinks.." decision hierarchy and so is totally useless. Such individuals second-think themselves to death and end up doing nothing.

The vast majority of people operate at the first level, essentially attempting to analyse why somebody acted they way they did and what their motivations mean toward them. However their analysis is usually based on incomplete or faulty knowledge. In many cases it is simply a consideration of the actions of whatever archetype they have pigeonholed the other individual into. They tend to attempt to fit the person into their own reaction matrix. Unfortunately this generally leads to the suspicion of what benefit the other individual gets out of the action, which generally leads to suspicion, and in extreme situations, paranoia.

The best reaction level is level zero, which assumes their is no game, no trap, and no ulterior motive in the things people do, and thus things are simply what they are. This is often called enlightenment by those that follow a Zen path.

It's nice.

Did some personal development courses a while back that had that focus, bit before I met you.

Of course, it's also very hard, but some people make it look easy.
